Caring for your Dentures

There are a few simple tips and tricks that you can use to make sure you get the most out of your dentures.

Choose the right cleaning products

One of the most common mistakes new patients make is cleaning their dentures with normal toothpaste. To prolong the life of your dentures, choosing a denture toothpaste or cleaning tablet to soak them overnight (both which can be found in your local supermarket), is the first step to ensuring you are not causing unnecessary abrasion to the acrylic.

Just as coffee, red wine, cigarettes, and even some medications can cause discolouration to dentures, incorrect cleaning products can be abrasive to the acrylic and reduce their longevity.

Don’t wear dentures overnight

We advise against leaving dentures in overnight as it may lead to the accumulation of bacteria, and consequent bad breath. In some cases, it may even lead to irreversible damage. However, it is important to consult with your GP, as it may be necessary to leave them in, such as with the use of sleep apnoea devices.

Book regular check ups

To maintain optimum hygiene and denture health, we suggest booking in for regular check-ups. Just as natural teeth do, dentures can wear down over time, and may need realignment to ensure the best fit for the structure of your mouth. Even significant changes in weight can have an effect on the comfort of your dentures.

Replacing damaged dentures

Adelaide Dentures provides emergency services that can assist with broken or damaged dentures. It is not necessary to replace entire dentures in the case of damage, which is often a misconception amongst many patients. It’s important that your mouth has time to adjust to the particular shape and feel of a set of custom-designed dentures, and this helps increase the comfort and ease of how patients wear them. However, it’s always good to have a backup set, in case they are missed placed or broken.

Did you know?

The texture of some mints can be damaging to dentures.  When chewing such mints with dentures it is much like chewing sandpaper and can quickly destroy them.
